New sewing machine

New equipment acquired: April 13, 2020 Big excitement! I have 1 mini manual sewing machine, and have 1 mini automatic machine. I also had a 2nd Hand Fong Wah desktop type mini automatic sewing machine. Unfortunately, they all failed on me, or I failed to operate them. They can't sew. I tried fixing the the Fong Wah one with an experienced sewer, but in the end I only broke it. I realize that I want a more serious machine. It's a waste of time. This, the butterfly, I heard is a quite famous home/consumer brand since 1919. I bought this JH8330A from Taobao for RMB$7XX. The English manual is not bad, actually it is good. I have a lot of hope on this machine. Tonight, I have learned the basics of machine sewing on this butterfly. - thread the upper thread, lower thread - wind a bobbin - sew forward and reverse

Banbao LEGO: motorcycle

Completion date: April 14, 2020 My banbao LEGO is here! My first project is building motorcycle from manual. My reflection on this build - three gears linear cluster turns the gears in a way that the 1st and 3rd gears are in the same direction.  - the 3-gear cluster’s function is to displace the turning motion to happen in another place. In this case, the back wheels can’t be directly connected to the motor, that’s why the 3-gear cluster would help.  - there are two types of connectors that look similar but provide a bit different functions. They act as pivot. One is smooth-pivot, the other is a stuck-pivot (need more force to turn) My first encounter with Banbao: really happy.  - It is not as good as LEGO in the fitting - It is really cheap, I imagine this would cost around HK$1000 with LEGO. Now around 1/3 of the price - It seems there are more variety of parts than LEGO - LEGO has actual size illustration on page for axles. Banbao could provide ruler sticker as a...

Kids' "spaceship"

Completion date: March 7, 2020 After my son seeing me making the bed tent, he picked up the rest of the boards and started building a spaceship.  He had the whole design and we put the boards together.  It was great for me to see him working away with hammer.  He and his sister had fun inside the spaceship.

Kids' tent "over" bed

Completion date: March 7, 2020 My son is growing taller, I need him to sleep in a longer bed, it's not always easy to make the change, I want him to like this change.  From the leftover of these mix-and-match boards, I have made a tent over his bed.  He likes it. There is always something we can do to make things happen.

Book: 機巧裝置 機構設計應用圖典 從零開始也能實踐簡易自動化

Purchased date: February 23, 2020 Finally received the book yesterday in EF Locker!  Actually this book was recommended to me in Taobao few months ago and I really wanted to read this!  It's not in the library and ebook not available, so I ordered from Taiwan (I was too chicken to order it from Taobao China due to the outbreak now).  The book and shipping costed HK$200.  I think it's worth it.  I consider buying this book for quite some time, because I don't like to stock up books at home, no space.  But, What I truly feared was that I couldn't understand any of it. We afraid because we are ignorant. It's mechanics.  I read some and it wasn't so bad of me.  It is actually a really good book for looking up the common mechanics.  So, I am quite happy I got this book.

Sweat pad I

Everyone sweats and it could be a problem. The existing situation: I do buy those underarm sweat pad (single-use) sweat pads in stores, but they lack the absorbency that I am looking for.  These sweat pads has sweat on top when they couldn't absorb anymore.  One would need to change and putting them on could be kind of difficult at times (because the double-sided tape sticks together.  Also I am looking for a more flexible way to use/replace pads instead of having to buy these specially made ones.  Finally, I am looking for a more environmental-friendly solution.  As of today I am writing this blog (Feb 17 2020), I haven't resolved all issues mentioned above, but I did solve most. In sum, I would like to make a sweat pad that is: - lightweight - washable - instant dry, or very quick dry after washing - durable - reduce waste - easy to apply to clothings - absorbing material to be replaceable without taking off the whole sweat pad do...
